Sergiy Galyonkin rezygnuje z funkcji szefa strategii wydawniczej w Epic Games

Head of publishing strategy at Epic Games, Sergiy Galyonkin, recently announced his departure from the company. This news comes at a time when the company has already laid off over 800 employees. Galyonkin took to X to share his farewell message, stating, „Today is officially my last day at Epic Games. These eight years have been some of the most exciting in my career, and I am deeply grateful to my former Epic Games colleagues and Tim Sweeney for allowing me to help build Epic 4.0.”

Galyonkin’s Journey

Galyonkin’s career in the gaming industry includes his previous work at Wargaming Group, known for developing popular titles like World of Tanks and World of Warships. In 2016, Galyonkin joined Epic Games as the head of publishing for Eastern Europe and later took on the position of director of publishing strategy.

Aside from his role at Epic Games, Galyonkin also maintained Steam Spy, a statistical service that provides information on trending and upcoming games on the Steam platform. He has also been known for discussing the launch of Fortnite and the potential success of free-to-play games without pay-to-win elements.

The Evolution of Epic Games

Epic Games has undergone significant changes and improvements over the years, with Galyonkin referring to the company’s transformation as „Epic 5.0.” The journey began with Epic 2.0, which saw the company team up with GT Interactive. Epic 3.0 marked a partnership with Microsoft, and in 2012, when Tencent acquired a 40% stake in the company, Epic 4.0 was born.

However, Galyonkin expressed that he did not feel he was the right fit for this new version of Epic Games, as the company strives to become a platform rather than just a game developer, engine creator, and publisher. In his farewell message, he stated, „Now, Epic Games is on its way to transforming into a platform – Epic 5.0. I am not a good fit for this new version of Epic; it requires people of a different kind.”

Although Galyonkin is leaving Epic Games, he assured that he has no plans to leave the gaming industry. In fact, he expressed his desire to be more vocal now that he no longer has to worry about the PR department monitoring his communications. His departure will undoubtedly leave a void at Epic Games, and the company will be eager to fill his position with another industry veteran. With various changes taking place simultaneously, the future of Epic Games is certainly worth keeping an eye on.
